Overcoming the biggest block to your business success

Do you know what the biggest block to your business success is?

Brace yourself because this is going to sting… it’s most likely YOU!

Starting out on this business journey, I doubt any of us had any idea how much our own personal development (or lack of it) would impact our business.

Becoming a business owner and selling services that YOU provide has you questioning everything.

  • Are you just kidding yourself that you can do this?

  • Are you good enough to do this?

  • Are the results you get good enough?

  • Does everyone think you’re rubbish at it but just won’t say it to your face?

  • How can you chase the money you are owed when customers probably haven’t paid because they didn't think the work you did was good enough?

  • Are people sick of seeing you sell on your socials?

  • Are your emails boring?

The list goes on and on.

And this overthinking can trip people up for a really long time.

It drags up all kinds of memories from the past.

Things that were said to us, that time we felt really small and ashamed of something we didn’t understand, that one time when you messed up. They all get dragged up to the surface and if you don’t deal with them, they can really hold you back. If you are stuck in freeze mode, working with someone to help you process, release and heal from these past events can be super worthwhile - both for your nervous system and your business (if you need a recommendation, just shout).

If you are serious about building your business and being successful (i.e. making money that pays for the lifestyle YOU want to live) then it is super important that you do the personal development work and healing to clear all those worries and limiting beliefs above AND that you realise that you are not your business and whilst you work on your personal stuff you can still build a thriving business.

Start by turning on your business mindset

When you “go to work” - you start thinking from the place of being a business owner. Because we are asking you to step out of the shoes of who you are at home and into your CEO slippers - marking that state change can be super helpful.

You might want a separate office space, to light a candle that you then associate with work, listen to a playlist that inspires you to get shit done, drink your tea from a work mug rather than the ones you normally use at home. When you are done with work, you then mark the state change again - maybe a walk and then come back in the front door, or a workout or phoning a friend.

Your business is separate from you

Your business is an entity in its own right, regardless of whether you are a limited company, CIC or sole trader. Your business is separate from you. It will have its own values, goals and energy (although you will direct them).

You might be the only person in your business. It might be you that created the frameworks and models that your clients use. You are the creative brain behind your content and your courses - but every time someone pays money into your business, they are paying for the products and services your business offers and NOT for you and a piece of your soul.

You are separate from your business and the numbers that your business generates do not reflect your worth.

You need to trust that you are great at what you do and you know this because you have been a smart cookie and collected testimonials from previous clients who couldn’t get enough of you (if you haven’t, go back and ask). Refresh your memory of the results you have helped your clients achieve.

You have been learning the skills you use in your role in your business for your whole lifetime and you have spent years gaining the experience you have that makes you an excellent provider of the service/products that you offer.

You will likely never feel ready enough

It is important that you understand that you will likely never feel ready enough - so you must get used to just doing it anyway. If you’re not scared, then you are not making big enough moves. Your first launch might be awful - it doesn’t matter, you will learn loads and that makes the second one a bit better. By your 10th launch, you probably won’t remember how much they used to scare you.

Also let’s note feeling scared and feeling excited elicit the same physical responses so keep reminding yourself that you are in fact excited!

As with anything new, the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

Free space in your mind

You can also help yourself by automating tasks, having clear SOPs and when you’re ready, building a team.

I used to wait for comments on my social posts, to check it had landed ok and I’d feel sick after I’d posted. Now I rarely even post. I write the content for the most part but someone else schedules it so I don’t even know when it's gone out. I send and chase outstanding invoices using Xero’s automated options so I don’t need to think about it or get in the way.

I don’t faff about with messages back and forth, my clients get a link to book calls and I show up. Where it's possible to free space in my mind from the everyday tasks that are required to run a business, I do, which means I’ve got energy, creativity and strategic ideas for days that I can then deliver to my clients. They get the best of me because I run my business like a CEO and not an employee.

So stop being the block to success in your business. Start implementing some of the above ideas and get out of your own way. If you’d like to chat about any of the above ideas, just drop me a DM.

You can do this.
You deserve this.
You are ready.

I’m cheering you on all the way!
